Human reaction to the elephant

This is the shot where the human sees the elephant burst through the wall, Lawrence asked for a simple design and he wanted the human to tilt his head to the side and then blink, the next shot involved the screaming as the human runs away, I redrew the mouth with keyframes in order to allow to keep changing when the human was screaming, I think this was a nice effect as when played through it looked quite nice.

Scream Perspective Shot Version 3

After Lawrence had seen the 2nd version he suggested that instead of having the arms not visible when the hands were shaking, he would have preferred to have seen them bending outwards so I drew the two arms and then I attempted to convert them to symbols in order to add a tween, I wanted to rotate the arms along with the movement of the hands however this didn't work as the arms came out of place and the hands were not connected to them at points.

Scream Perspective shot version 2

This is the 2nd version of the perspective shot of the scream, I added some detail to the eyes and an in-between before the hands are lifted up.

Scream Perspective shot

In this shot the man is looking down at the mouse and then begins to scream when he sees him this leads up to the next angle of the scream.

Scream 2 versions 1 and 2

This is the first version of the 2nd scream animation, I used the timings from the animatic as well as a screen shot as a guide to animate the character, I converted the head to a symbol and added a tween to rotate it back and forth. I also made sure that I drew the mouth and then redrew a new one on blank keyframes therefore every frame for the mouth was a keyframes and it kept changing which ended with a nice effect like the last scream in the humans reaction to the elephant animation. Lawrence mentioned to me that he would add the hands later on in After Effects, therefore there were no hand animated in this clip.

An edited version of the scream, I had to make the man look down instead of across the room, as he is supposed to be screaming at the mouse in this scene.

Mouse looking up

This is the clip of the mouse looking up, this is the result after mapping out the movement of the mouse as he lifts his head up, after seeing the human, this will be sent on to Lawrence to use in after effects for the final film.

Mouse looking up mapping

This is the next part of animation that i need to do, this is the mouse looking up at the human, i have worked on mapping out the mouses movement before i carry on and this is what i ended up with. A little more work is needed for this to look  better however.

Scream Test

This is a test I did to see if we could animate in flash and then import the SWF file into After Effects, We found out however that it would be easier to animate on a background in flash so that we know where things are in the animation. But once we were finished we would delete the background and use the same background in after effects however it would have 3d tiers. Here is the scream animation test.

Character Designs- Simple Shapes

The group decided as a whole that it would be easier if we could have a character made up of simple shapes thus adding to the ease of animating, I tried to come up with a few ideas for the mouse character, also mentioned was they way in which the elephant could contrast with the mouse being made up of jagged edges.

Storyboarding: The door to the human

Yet more storyboard, again i concentrated on part of the middle of the story from the mouse seeing the door till the mouse sees the human.

The Escape

The following sketches show ideas that i generated, these ideas were for the way the mouse could escape from the Human once both of them meet.

Middle of Story- Possible Ideas

I was given the task to storyboard the middle of the scene, I looked at the script written by Lawrence and then used that to come up with an idea for the middle part of the animation.

Thumbnail Sketches

I drew out some quick thumbnail sketches to outline the story, we had to fill in the gap of the "sandwich" which is our story for the animation. In-between the mouse seeing the door and the elephant bursting into the house, I wanted to incorporate a scene of the mouse dashing around the kitchen dodging various dangers around the kitchen such as cutlery and so on, the mouse could also knock something over preferably a drink, he would then run into the human and there would be a screaming match between the mouse and the human and then the elephant will burst into the kitchen and see the mouse and then run away destroying everything.

Elephant Character Designs

These are the Elephant character designs I have drawn, I used references from google images of Both cartoon and real life Elephants.

Some of the designs include tusks and the legs and ears differ throughout, the question of animating the tail comes to mind like it did with the mouse, do we make the tail a solid shape or just a line.

Mouse character designs

The Director of my group Lawrence Vincent, asked that we draw out some character designs for the animation, we had to draw mice as the main character of the animation is a mouse, i drew 4 pages of design  for the mouse, concentrating on the idea of a pair of "goofy" teeth for the mouse along with a long nose and whiskers.

I used google images for references, i copied some images and used some other to inspire my ideas, I combined parts from one with another.
